Roman reenactment is the practice of recreating the life, military culture, and material world of ancient Rome through accurate costumes, equipment, and combat techniques. Groups range from armored combat units competing at living history events to scholarly societies focused on historical accuracy and public education.

This directory lists 59 Roman reenactment and living history groups across more than 15 countries — from combat simulation units in the United States to scholarly societies throughout Europe, Australia, and Asia. It is the most comprehensive English-language directory of its kind.

How to Join a Roman Reenactment Group

Joining a Roman reenactment group requires no prior experience — most groups welcome complete newcomers and will guide you on equipment, events, and what to expect. Follow these steps to get started.

  1. Find a group near you. Browse this directory by region. US & Canada groups are listed first, followed by international groups. Most groups list their location in the card.
  2. Visit their website. Each group has its own focus — some emphasize historical accuracy and living history displays, others are combat simulation units. Read their site to understand their style and event schedule before reaching out.
  3. Contact the group directly. Use the website or Facebook link on their card. Most groups are happy to answer questions about membership requirements, upcoming events, and what gear you'll need to get started.
  4. Attend a practice or public event. Most groups hold open practices or participate in public living history events where you can meet members and try activities before committing. This is the best way to find the right fit.
  5. Acquire basic equipment. Groups will advise on what to build or buy. If you're in the eastern United States, Rome offers step-by-step guides for building your own padded javelin, padded shield, and Roman armor. We also train our new military citizens to build their own lorica musculata. It’s a rite of passage.
